It’s Official! The Othermill is Ready

Posted by Danielle Applestone on Oct 13, 2014 12:22:00 PM

We haven’t done a ton of posts lately, but we’ve been busy! Last month, we finished our Kickstarter shipments. And today we are finally ready to talk about all of the work we have been doing behind the scenes.

Othermills Are for Sale

Our post-Kickstarter, street-legal Othermill is now in production. It has a number of subtle changes that make it safer and easier to transport. You can scope out the details here.

We Have a New Website

We wanted to show our machine through the stories of our customers. We even created three featured stories: Limor Fried of Adafruit, Star Simpson of OnBeep, and Jamie Zigelbaum of Midnight Commercial. We are proud of what the Othermill allows these customers to do, so we thought it would be great to share what they’ve been up to.

We also have put a lot of hard work into a few new kits that are on our store. These kits are for things like printmaking and mold making, if you are looking to learn new techniques with your Othermill.

Software Release

Now you can use the Othermill to cut directly from 2D graphics files — SVGs to be precise. This will open up the Othermill to folks who are used to designing in programs like Illustrator or who want to download files online and get cutting right away. If you want to see just how many of these files there are out there, try googling something like “free cat svg.” 1,150,000 results! I usually start there, and then modify one of the graphics I find with Illustrator or Inkscape (which is free!) Now all you need to get milling is one of these SVGs.

Origin Story

Our CTO, Mike Estee, poured his heart out in an article about we’ve been on for the past 18 months. Check it out if you want to learn more about us and how we got here: Confessions of a Hardware Startup

In closing, we are always happy to hear from you, whether it is questions or photos of what you’ve been making. Don’t hesitate to email/tweet/post at us. We would love to feature your work in the next newsletter or blog post.

Be well and happy milling!
