Hi! My name’s Martine. Welcome to OtherFab’s blog. Nice to see you.

I’ll be bopping around on the blog a bit so let me tell you something about myself, then we can be friends. In short, I’m an art nerd (or just a nerd, nerd) with a background in museums and machining. While most folks start working in shops in high school, I didn’t discover it until after college. I really loved the work but was also pretty intimidated by the vast amount of knowledge I was missing and the steepness of the learning curve. This has lead me to my current mission: to babble at you nice folk about how we’re making the machines to solve all your problems, I swear.

I joined up at OtherFab because of the unfulfilled promise I see in computer controlled machine tools. Machines that will allow us to make or customize almost any physical thing we can imagine in the comfort of our own homes, studios, or workshops. Modern computer controlled machine tools have already completely altered the landscape of commercial manufacture: making it easier, cheaper and more customizable. There’s a quote from William Gibson that runs around nerd communities and I’ll bastardized as: “the future is here it’s just not evenly distributed.” It’s time to distribute.

rock.
