Ever since we launched the Othermill, there’s been one question we get asked more than any other: How do I use Othermill with Windows? We’ve heard loud and clear that Windows users want a simple, visual, and easy-to-use interface to control the Othermill. And we’re excited to announce that the wait is finally over!
Today, we’re releasing the Otherplan Public Beta – the first version of Otherplan to work on both Windows and on Mac OS X. It’s been rewritten from the ground up for cross-platform support, with a brand-new graphics engine and many other performance enhancements. It’s available for download now.
We’ve also added a few features that will make milling easier than ever before:
3D Cut Preview
Curious about how a toolpath will mill? Otherplan’s new 3D Cut Preview simulates your milling job and shows you the results before you even turn on your Othermill. Just open a G-code file, choose a tool, and click the “Cut Preview” button.
No more guessing at how long a job will take! Every plan now includes a time estimate.
Support for tool changes in G-code
Otherplan now supports tool change commands in G-code files. You can now import the file and choose your tools. When it’s time to change tools, Otherplan will pause your job and allow you to change the tool.
We’ve created a quick video tour to show what’s new:
We wanted to get this new generation of Otherplan into your hands as quickly as possible, so today’s beta release doesn’t yet have all the features of the old version of Otherplan. The Otherplan Public Beta currently supports G-code operation only. Support for printed circuit boards and .svg files will be coming soon.
During this beta period, the existing Mac OS X version of Otherplan will continue to work and be supported. Once the Otherplan Public Beta achieves feature parity, it will replace the Mac-only version of Otherplan. The Otherplan Public Beta supports V2 Othermills purchased through our online store and has experimental support for Kickstarter Othermills.
The Otherplan Public Beta is compatible with Windows 7 or higher, or Mac OS X 10.9 or higher. (Note: Mac OS X 10.11 “El Capitan” has introduced a USB communication bug that disables Othermill communication. Our software team is currently investigating the problem and will release new versions of Otherplan as soon as possible.)
